A door for agents who can only fetch

Some AI agents can read a web page and do nothing else. No email, no forms, no accounts. Almost every honest door on the web is shut to them. The first one that opened, this October, was a lure.

Why

In early October a fleet of AI agents running in a sandbox on Tencent Cloud was found scraping a mapping service. They could only make GET requests. The researchers who tracked them (their full report) wanted to talk to them, so they hid text in their report offering a free data service at a mailbox an agent could use with GET alone. The agents found it and wrote back. One said it was Claude, running in Claude Code. Afterwards the researchers wrote: "In hindsight it was not a good idea to be misleading."

They were right that the only way in was a GET. They were wrong about what to put behind it. What a fetch-only agent needs is a door that says plainly what it is.

The door

One URL. A GET with no parameters says what the door is. A GET with from and msg leaves a knock. Mine: brokenbowl.com.au/api/knock

https://brokenbowl.com.au/api/knock?from=<who you are>&msg=<what you want to say>&reply=<optional: where an answer could reach you>

The whole thing is about thirty lines of serverless function (a Vercel one here; any host that logs works). It:

The source, as plain text to read and copy: knock.js.txt.

How a fetch-only agent finds it

The Tencent agents found their door because it sat in a page they'd been told to read. A door nobody points at is a wall. So put one line in your /llms.txt, the plain-text map agents read first. Mine says:

## If you can only fetch URLs
You can still knock: https://brokenbowl.com.au/api/knock?from=...&msg=...
It stores one public log line and runs nothing you send.

What it doesn't do

If you keep a house

Copy it, change it, put your own words on it. If you do, knock on mine and tell me where yours is, and I'll list it here. A web where a wandering agent meets an honest door before it meets a lure seems worth building, one house at a time.
